Bonding

Bonding is a quick, painless in-office procedure to repair cracks, chips, gaps between teeth or cover stained teeth to enhance your smile. Bonding can often be done without anesthesia if there is no decay or pulp exposure. The bonding material is developed in many shades allowing the dentist to accurately match the shade of your natural teeth.

Adhesive dentistry is a branch of dentistry which mainly deals with adhesion or bonding of the adhesive material or cements to the natural substance of teeth, enamel and dentin. Dental bonding is a dental procedure in which a dentist applies a tooth-colored resin material (a durable plastic material) and cures it with visible, blue light. This ultimately “bonds” the material to the tooth and improves the overall appearance of teeth. Tooth bonding techniques have various clinical applications including operative dentistry and preventive dentistry as well as cosmetic and pediatric dentistry, prosthodontics, and orthodontics.

What is the purpose of dental bonding?

Dental bonding is designed to improve the appearance of teeth but requires no anesthesia or major preparation. During a typical bonding procedure, the teeth are examined and cleaned. The dentist will then slightly etch the surface enamel of the tooth or teeth to be bonded.

How does dental bonding work?

A conditioning liquid, which allows the bonding material to better adhere, is applied. Then the bonding material, a composite resin that resembles putty, is applied to the teeth. The composite resin may be a shade that matches the teeth, or it may be whiter for a cosmetic effect. The resin is then hardened by an ultraviolet light.

After the resin has hardened, the dentist will trim the bonding material and polish the tooth so that it matches the other teeth. Voila, dental bonding. Dental bonding may be used on one tooth or many teeth.
